I've been neglecting dreamwidth lately; I didn't really do a lot of fanfic reading in the past year (mostly due to geopolitics--it felt kind of weird to read about Cold War pairings when there's actual political tensions going on lol); instead I became more active on the r/babymetal and r/sakuragakuin sub-threads on reddit--which has been pretty unexpected. I even went to Japan to catch a concert. :) It's a completely different type of fandom (hey, it's music and idols! -_-;;) but fandom nonetheless; and the threads make it so much easier to keep up with conversations. Sorry, Tumblr; you're pretty but my attention span is zilch on your platform.

Also, if you haven't seen the awesomeness that is Dragon Age Inquisition do consider checking it out; I predict that quite a number of femslash fics will be based off of this one--mostly because some characters have no in-game options for F/F romance. :) I appreciate that. If you wanted to hear some witty (well--maybe snarky) conversation while checking out some of the gameplay I would recommend checking out Geek Remix's Let's Play of it. They're pretty good at figuring out what would feel like stale gameplay for the viewer and showcasing some of the more important dialogues and/or scenes. They dive right in after doing the character creation off screen. They did finish playing it, so I felt like it was a good time to share it. :D And here's their DA:I bingo card while you're at it.

Since I'm posting this I'll post some manga recs here too...

Fluttering Feelings photo fluttering-feelings.jpg

The only yuri manga that I've been quite excited about in the last few weeks have been Samba's Fluttering Feelings. It's so good, I wish she had an official English translation subscription so I can support her and subscribe to her updates. ^_^ There's 22 chapters out at the moment but I think this site has linked to only the first 5 (I think the fanpage has more). If you understand Korean, here's the official site for this series. [Update 25 June 2015: Someone created an overlay guide and visual guide on how to register and read the chapters on Comico itself!]

As for others...

5 Centimeters per Second by SHINKAI Makoto (artist: SEIKE Yukiko)
"A tale of two people, Tono Takaki and Shinohara Akari, who were close friends but gradually grow farther and farther apart as time moves on. They become separated because of their families yet continue to exchange contact in the form of letters. Yet as time continues to trudge on, their contact with one another begins to cease. Years pass and the rift between them grows ever larger. However, Takaki remembers the times they have shared together, but as life continues to unfold for him, he wonders if he would be given the chance to meet Akari again as the tale embarks on Takaki's realization of the world and people around him."

By the same creator of "Voices from a Distant Star;" it's very good. Prepare tissues for this one.

Real Clothes by MAKIMURA Satoru
Kinue is a saleswoman in the futon section of a department store. Despite her plain clothes and poor makeup, she ends up being transferred to the women’s clothing department, where she has to be trained by her extraordinarily fashionable boss.

Since [personal profile] somniesperus will be taking down her website at the end of May, I've updated all of my links on the DWP Notables page to link to her works on AO3 (even the ones on Dreamwidth).

Please let me know on this post if there are other dead links to update and hopefully I'll be able to get to them before I have to travel again...

I've merged the Ironman recs into the Avengers section as the Natasha fics should be in one place.

Avengers, The
Fractures by [archiveofourown.org profile] tamoline (Natasha/Pepper)
"Everyone has weaknesses, faults, flaws, fractures. The things they're not quite rational about. The things that inform their every action. The things that can be used against them."

Nice solid progressive development.

masks that the monsters wear, the by [archiveofourown.org profile] beardsley (Natasha/various; dark AU, please read warnings)
"Natasha joins SHIELD. Four years later, the Winter Soldier starts targeting the Avengers. But the real story starts in 1935, in Stalingrad. Or maybe 1950, when the Red Room sends her on her first mission. Or maybe 1959, when Natasha meets the Winter Soldier. Or maybe..."

Thought provoking, this one cuts deep with its vivid imagery and many layers. All at once chilling, grim, and fragile. I have to say that this fic may be one of my favorites this year. Not every fic can give you goosebumps, but this one did, for me.

For those who don't know who Yelena Belova is, the author (also known as [personal profile] troublesteady / [tumblr.com profile] troublesteady) gives a quick primer here. For those who are interested in that kind of thing, the author also wrote some interesting meta about Natasha being sexual and aromantic.

I've finished retagging my journal using the multi-level tagging system (which looks better when the profiles and tags are on the left, for some reason, hence: the slight style changes). I've also taken the liberty to delete a few odds and ends that didn't quite work out, such as that lesbian cliche aka trope list.
ein_myria: (cherry)
1. The reclists should now be arranged without articles like "A, An, and The" at the beginning, since that's what y'all voted for earlier. Please let me know in the comments to this post if I missed one. :)

2. Now that the Yuletide reveals have been up for a while the last batch of recs have been tagged with the rightful authors, and have been merged with the rest of the notables. :)

3. Moved These Strange Steps by [archiveofourown.org profile] thememoriesfire (Glee, Quinn/Rachel, stripper!quinn, warning:BDSM) from WIP to Notables page, since it's now finished. Unfortunately, the other WIP that involved a genderswap by TMF seems to have been put on the backburner (aka, discontinued) due to a writer's block.

[personal profile] dreiser just established herself on DW (yay!) but is looking for femslash communities to join.

I recently posted an update of DW F/F Links to add on to the ones from the old [community profile] girlgay profile but if you know of some more, please drop a comment; thanks!

[personal profile] elleth: Roundup: The Latest LJ Fail (And Fails to Come), First Steps on DW.
Remember my last post about how LJ was going to get rid of comment topics? It happened. There's already a CSS work-around available, but there seems to be a lot of people making back-ups at DW. I say back-ups because I doubt many will actually move.

[personal profile] mirabella: I just kind of felt like this needed to be said.
"Fandom has, like, a ten-year history of screaming blue murder about changes and then failing to leave or even stop buying paid accounts. Then you're all incredulous because the owners of LJ won't listen to you. Of course they won't listen to you. Why should they? You've taught them that there is literally nothing they can do that is so bad that you'll leave the service over it."

[personal profile] rydra_wong is hosting a Giant Community Rec-O-Matic!
Here's how it works: You leave a comment saying what sort of comms you'd be interested in finding on Dreamwidth (or you could ask people to rec comms on the basis of your profile interests). Other people reply to you with recs for active comms that are relevant to your interests.

When You Get Older by [archiveofourown.org profile] evewithanapple (Hanna/Sophie)
Two years after her brush with a mysterious girl and an even more mysterious government agency, Sophie is now in her first year of university, concentrating on her studies and trying not to think about the girl who still haunts her thoughts. But when Hanna unexpectedly drops back into her life, Sophie can no longer ignore what the other girl represents- to the world, and to herself.

Read this a while ago, when victoria.p on pinboard first rec'ed it, and found the concept to be quite nicely fleshed out.

Update 1/11/2011 - Updated stories with alternative Google Docs provided by the author, who has deleted his/her LJ.

Updated Links )
ein_myria: (headphone girl)
...can't believe it's mid-October already.

For those who do not have pinboard, this is what's available if you search for femslash, femmeslash, and f/f. [personal profile] murklins has posted several userscripts (like this one) that has drastically improved the user experience for the site, so if you want to see what people've done to make pinboard shinier, stay tuned to [community profile] pinboard.

I should also give notice that as part of my pinboard updates I've also been changing the URLs for some LJ accounts on my notables list to alternatives if there are some to be found (eg: AO3, DW, personal website). LJ has been a little unstable and that Lancome ad was driving me nuts.

Whoever it was: Thank you very much!

Currently testing out Pinboard. Excuse the mess while I start bookmarking all over again since AVOS fucked up the tags and timestamps during the export. *sighs*

Edit: I think I figured out a way to organize the tags without the tag bundle functionality that works for me, anyway. I'll continue to add bookmarks over the next few days. I also cleaned up a few things... )
FYI, the great delicious migration spreadsheet that I linked to in the last post was down temporarily but it's now up. [livejournal.com profile] jedusaur has also set up a [livejournal.com profile] pinboard community. (there's now also [community profile] pinboard!)

further adventures in pinboard )

Update: [personal profile] bookshop has collected some useful migration information together in this post, including but not limited to how to salvage your delicious a/c bookmarks through a possible hack, more #deliciousfail reactions, and the [twitter.com profile] pinboard/fandom relationship ([personal profile] niqaeli also wrote about this but in a more cautious manner, carefully considering whether the payment model was viable in the long run).

I just updated the URL for the following fic when i realized it was broken:
and isn’t this exactly where you’d like me by [archiveofourown.org profile] thememoriesfire (Rachel/Quinn)
"Rachel ends up temporarily living in Las Vegas for a show she has to do there (let’s say 2-3 months) and drunkenly stumbles upon a stripper who plays up her innocence and asks for a private dance. Once in the back, Rachel realizes it’s Quinn Fabray and tries to leave but Quinn makes sure she gets her money’s worth."

I also found a few old screenshots I had taken from Blue bloods that's totally ripe for femslash )

As some of you may have noticed, I have started using an OpenID account for LJ and IJ commenting. I wasn't sure what the difference between OpenID and a normal user account was until I spotted a very user-friendly guide (Using an Open ID account at Livejournal by [personal profile] facetofcathy) and decided to take the plunge--I saw some merit in the 'it's not very friendly for users to see a blank journal' rationale. Since I'm not using the journaling services on those sites I might as well hand over the journaling resources to more active users. :)

I have decided to update the Femslash Escapist Adventure 10 list rather than leave a broken link in perpetuity. After some thought, I've crossed out Anik's Jungle Fever (since it's headed for publication) and added Sharon Bowers' totally classic X-Files/Silence of the Lambs cross-over fic, Phases of Fire. This one exhibited all the signs of tight writing, fairly spot on characterization, and great case fic. It also has the dubious honor of being the first femslash work that I've read (and kept me reading, obviously lol). There's an element of nostalgia there, yes, but the work stands for itself. Unlike many, it still stands strong against the test of time...

For those interested in reading accessibility issues, I saw this article on Smart Bitches, Trashy Books today: The Blind Teaching the Reader: An Interview. Related: TOC 2011: Jim Fruchterman, "Making the Book Truly Accessible".

Also, via [community profile] ebooks: HarperCollins is trying to set an amount for how many times a digital ebook can be lent, and access to patron information. Librarians, e-book library users, and others are waving pitchforks at the moment, it seems. Here's a resource guide I spotted on a twitter feed.

There's definitely some great content being shared on the O'Reilly "Tools of Change for Publishing 2011" conference channel. Some highlights: TOC 2011: Margaret Atwood, "The Publishing Pie: An Author's View" (here's her interview after her keynote), TOC 2011: Kathy Sierra, "Creating Passionate Users", and Dana Newman's interview (she's a lawyer who deals with transactional and intellectual property law). Ex libris: TOC 2011: Anna Gerber & Britt Iverson, "Visual Editions: Part Revolution, Part Reinvention..." (very cool!)

Apparently anyone can create a DW account without an invite code until February 28th.

Anik La Chev has taken down Campus (ST:V uber) and Jungle Fever (Hospital Central uber) in preparation for publication, therefore those links will be taken down from the notables list. :(

Lost Girl
Ways to Tell You I'm Sorry by [livejournal.com profile] heartsways is now complete, updated the links on the main notables page.

Rizzoli & Isles
A Little Cold Series by [livejournal.com profile] snuffnyc is now complete, updated links. eneri has been bugging me to read it. Yes, it was a pretty cute read; it addressed certain imbalances towards the middle and had a bit of a case fic aspect towards the later segments.

Added fic summaries to the Harry Potter fanfic Notables master list. I've rewritten a couple of really horrible summaries but have left others intact.

Deleted because it is now f-locked:

Updated URLs due to a website gone awol:

Before the Dawn by [livejournal.com profile] snarkyroxy (HG/SS)
Our Winter by Jade Okelani (GW/DM)
Three Thousand Days of Innocence by [livejournal.com profile] cinnamon_badge (GW/DM)

I'm thinking of also putting together a list of people who rec the good stuff. I'm thinking of something along the lines of [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee's recs. Please drop a comment if you know of someone (or several people) who fit(s) the bill. :) Thanks!

Update 10/01/11-[livejournal.com profile] smutty_claus's masterlist is up and speaking of [livejournal.com profile] snegurochka_lee it looks like I rec'ed her fic (updated the hp notables to reflect that). lol Didn't expect that...

Update: Finished updating The Notables, the DWP notables, and the archive section. The HP list will have to be updated another time as it has no summaries whatsoever, just pairings.
