I'm back from hiatus! I've managed to slog through my "works in progress" list for updates this past week; now I'm currently going through my "to rec" bookmarks. I've had to reformat my laptop during the hiatus so I might have lost a bookmark or two. I hope to post a recslist later today or tomorrow.

The Tumblr "Adult Content" Debacle: Do most Tumblr Fandom users even notice that this is happening unless it's been reposted by members of their circle?
Adult Tumblr blogs now removed from every form of search possible by Violet Blue (zdnet)
New NSFW content restrictions enrage Tumblr users by Gavia Baker-Whitelaw (aka [tumblr.com profile] hellotailor) (Daily Dot)

Meta is on the rise
[community profile] metanews, a panfandom meta newsletter, is based in DW and collating things. Please help them out by linking to meta that you find if they missed something! :)

[personal profile] ajnabieh and [personal profile] memories_child are starting a research project on fandom auctions, particularly fandom auctions to support disaster relief after specific natural disasters. If you were involved in writing and/or arranging such auctions please consider helping them out. From the project description it seems like they're about to do quantitative analysis, which is only as useful as the amount of data points they have and the questions they ask of it.

So You Want to Find Some Fanvids to Impress Your Fellow Fen at the Next Meetup by [personal profile] calvinahobbes (kudos to [personal profile] nemonclature)
A fanvid primer.

Quick drive-by recs for eneri, who requested some recs with a little more...action. :)

Avengers, The
A bullet is a kiss by [archiveofourown.org profile] tristesses (Natasha/James Bond) (x-over)
"Trust is a handicap in their line of work, and friendship is a weakness. Natasha gives James Bond neither, but they have a good time regardless."

Fun cross-over. :)

Black Widow: The Movie I'm Not Writing series by [archiveofourown.org profile] waketosleep (gen)
"The prevalence of sexual cannibalism gives several species of spider in the genus Latrodectus the colorful common name "black widow". However, the female does not always kill and eat the male."

Fluid action and vivid imagery makes for a really cool part 2.

My Girlfriend, Who Lives in Portland by [archiveofourown.org profile] fabrega (Clint/Phil)
"I wish you could meet my girlfriend, but you can't because she is in Portland."

Interesting look at white lies.

Nine Lives of Natasha Romanoff, The by [archiveofourown.org profile] starrika (Natasha/Clint) (kudos to [pinboard.in profile] cyprinella)
"A story of how Natasha Romanoff found herself, with a little help from that annoying American with the bow."

Interesting progression.

Only Soldier Now Is Me, The by [archiveofourown.org profile] samalander (Natasha/Clint) (kudos to [pinboard.in profile] cyprinella)
"She told Loki that Barton was sent to kill her, and he made a different call. That’s only part of the story. And not even the most interesting part. An examination of Natasha Romanova's journey to SHIELD and the Avengers."

Harry Potter
Butterscotch by [archiveofourown.org profile] tamlane (Hermione/Blaise/Daphne)
Daphne propositions Hermione over popsicles, and Blaise suddenly decides he's feeling vanilla. Hermione should have realized that she was in for some serious sexual politics.

*fans self*

James Bond
Queen of Spades by [archiveofourown.org profile] astolat (James Bond/M) (kudos to [personal profile] somniesperus)
"Bond," M said, as he paused in the doorway to hear her out, "the next time you do something like this will be once too many."

*fans self even further*

This has been making the rounds and since I link to the site I might as well make an awareness post.

Via the denizens of DW (aka, Latest Things) and [personal profile] starlady:
Fiction Alley, one of the early pillars of Harry Potter fanfiction, can't pay for its server upkeep, and they're applying for a $25,000 grant from Pepsi Refresh. So far the reactions have been largely, "WTF? What ever happened to asking money from the Organization for Transformative Works?" and "Who really deserves the $25,000?"  Can largely non-substantive fanworks really stand up to other social justice requests? (The answer is no.)

I'm looking at what the other options are and am appalled.  What is this...fitness studios? School lunches?  High school endeavors?  Really?  That's what they're funding?

There's no option for using that money for R&D in projects like advanced cheap solar lighting and funding rural microfinance opportunities? (my head hurts.) The gap between the have's and have not's have not been so readily apparent.

Who defines "acceptable" fannish behaviour in social justice discussions? by [personal profile] jaythenerdkid / [livejournal.com profile] bewarethespork

I do disagree at one point - I don't for a minute think that those in the "ivory tower" can be so readily categorized, much as the author attempts to do in her post.
