It looks like Melissa Good is starting to write an original sci-fi story called Partners. Chapter 1 looks pretty good so far; I'm interested to see where she's going to take it. The storyline looks set to be a cross between that AI "awareness" / "consciousness" storyline in Ghost in the Shell and maybe AI-human love (the Aliens storyline) from what I've seen. The last good storyline that I've seen about AI and sci-fi in the past couple of years that's really advanced ideas regarding "the sea of consciousness" was probably Real Drive (Wikipedia article), or RD 潜脳調査室, and that had some pretty epic world building and meta. Don't think this fic will break that meta ceiling but who knows!

Edit: You can get the fansub of the Real Drive series here.

Also: 1st gen E-ink colors appear "a little dull." Looks like it'll be a while before my mythical cheap, accessible, and reliable colored e-ink reader becomes a reality. lol

Big Bangs, Baby! by [personal profile] strina
Master list of Big Bangs. "Big Bangs are a challenge that was developed over the years, it usually brings Authors and Artists together in a fandom to creat a completed, multi-part fic with accompanying art. The art works as a sort of reward for Authors who sign up to write anywhere between 10,000 to 50,000 word stories."

Thanks to Latest Things, a strange DW-only feature I never knew I would have liked until I had it, I found out that you can download ebook versions of fanfics on AO3. I have yet to try it since my PDA is busted--do you have to be a member of AO3 to use that feature? How does it work for series? The AO3 functionality should complement existing archives of femslash-oriented fanfic ebooks. Grr. This makes me want to get a dedicated e-reader even more. Luckily colored e-ink ereaders (which was on my wanted features list) should be out either this year or more widely by next year, although the pricing has yet to be set.

On to some femslash recs!

"Here, instead of writing well-considered, thorough recommendations for 50 stories over a period of months [which is what [livejournal.com profile] rec50 does], we list 50 stories all in one go. It's much faster, but (unless someone gets to feeling particularly conscientious) the reader gets much less information about a particular story. Of course, depending on the specificity of a list's theme, a reader may not need many particulars. Themes like 'incest fic' or 'threesomes' aren't exactly vague." They've even got an index, and it looks like there's some femslash, but not much! I urge all femslash rec'ers to contribute a 50 fic rec list sometime. :)
