"Well, love is insanity. The ancient Greeks knew that. It is the taking over of a rational and lucid mind by delusion and self-destruction. You lose yourself, you have no power over yourself, you can't even think straight." -Marilyn French. Set during the movie, this story could simply be seen as a few stolen femslash moments, but is much, much more than that.

Sankofa by
"Two years after Paris, Andy is finally settled in at The Mirror when she finds herself grudgingly pigeonholed into covering New York's Next Top Model. The question on everyone's lips: who on earth coerced Miranda Priestly into judging? Working in close-quarters with the Dragon Lady once again, will Andy be able to push through their complicated history and assert that she is, in fact, something more than Miranda's disappointing ex-assistant?"
She Likes a Prizefight by
"Love is the difficult realization that someone other than oneself is real." -Iris Murdoch. This vignette-styled story is set after the end of the movie, and has Miranda coming back into Andrea's life and taking charge once again. Why is Miranda doing this? Can Andrea do a thing about it, and does she even want to? The nuances of the power plays between the two protagonists are not overdone (which is a pleasant surprise) and it's refreshing to see a a largely slash writer do femslash so well. Kudos to

This series of vignettes has Miranda and Andy meet up in a Kendo dojo after the twins express their interest in joining the discipline. It does well in expanding Miranda's character and motivations. Andy's depiction on the other hand is slightly out of character (OOC).

X Ingredient, The by
"Miranda's assistants, once they have proven themselves worthy of trust, have a time-honored, very secret tradition of giving her oral sex whenever she asks for it. She does not, however, regard this as sex; neither do they. Therefore it is not intimacy, nor does it involve infidelity on either her part or theirs. It is part of their job, and one of the perks of hers. Nobody ever talks about it; nobody who has not been an assistant knows about it." Novella/Novel-Length
Truth and Measure by
Andy decides to stay with Miranda in Paris, to prove that she isn't like Miranda; that it is possible to have success, to be happy, and still be a halfway-decent person. So why is it that Andy still decides to tear herself away from her family on Christmas day to answer Miranda's beck and call in London? Why is it that once she gets there, she finds herself not baby-sitting the twins as she thought she would, or staying at a hotel, but staying at the Priestly residence and immediately whisked off as part of Miranda's entourage to high-society events?
Working Title by pin_drop (Andy/Miranda, Miranda/Nigel, Miranda/OFC)
The author adds wonderful character depth in this novella-length piece for Miranda and Nigel and how they relate to each other. I ought to add this spoiler addenda that while I found the interactions for Andy/Miranda to be very awkward in several places (highlight to unspoil) (the marijuana elevator sequence, the Paris Andy melt down sequence, and "let's make Andy the cook" sequence)--many of which seem out of character and out of place--it doesn't take away the awesomeness that is part 2 and the last sequence of the fic. Unconventional and not readily categorizable, indeed...

For "Disarming Athena," Andrea's characterization comes off as being a little manic depressive, which is a bit odd for me; not bad, just odd, because little nuggets of "emo" would just pop up--perhaps they could be packaged a little better to cushion their abruptness. The interaction between Andrea and Miranda felt slightly contrived, particularly the aggressive come-on sequence in the elevator, as well as the caressing and undressing--perhaps if the set up for the scenes weren't so brief (the various chapters felt more like vignettes), the pacing would have felt a little less choppy.
The author utilizes several interesting ideas in this piece, one of which was the use of Greek mythological deities as metaphors for the characters. It seems a tad simplistic and the implementation was a bit awkward but hey, it's there! Most authors haven't gone this route. The narrative does come off as a much more polished attempt than the author's previous piece in this genre, "A Mean Piece," where it's clear that the author is still trying to find the right tone for the characters.
Politic X

Date: 2011-04-30 10:29 pm (UTC)Look, in terms of direct feedback; some writers purposely go seeking for feedback, and others really, really don't. I've had some bad experiences where I was flamed pretty badly when I gave some constructive feedback, so...*shrugs* It's there if people want it to be. Some people think that the work is their baby; any "constructive" feedback might seen as being affront to their creative genius. Also, "constructive feedback" is only useful if they're writing something else along similar lines, or if they're adapting the work for publication (this was precisely the genre of fics that I focused on prior to moving to DW).
Certain contributors (as the above) also suggested certain stories to be put on the list. Rather than stay silent about their status, would it not be better to explain my rationale for not putting it on the main list? Readers are certainly welcome to check out the stories for themselves, I'm not stopping them. :) I can't do 'cuts' in the comments, otherwise I would.
